School choice activist Raaki Garcia-Ulam is the Education Policy Center’s School Choice for Kids Web Site Outreach Coordinator, specializing in outreach to the Hispanic community. She regularly gives presentations about the Web site in both English and Spanish to community leaders, civic organizations, and churches.
Raaki is often heard on local Spanish-language radio (1150 AM KCUV and 1650 AM KBJD), and has appeared on local television programs that include Independent Thinking, Buenos Dias Colorado, and Univision Channel 50 News. She also has contributed to articles in Metropoli News Magazine, La Voz, and El Pueblo Catolico.
Raaki has served professionally with organizations focused on improving the quality of education, and especially enhancing educational opportunities for members of the Hispanic community. She also worked as the Early Childhood Education Parent Coordinator for the Colorado Statewide Parent Coalition, and teaches English to English language learners. She is a member of the Hispanic Christian Chamber of Commerce, and the Alianza Ministerial.
Raaki has held a lifelong passion for learning, and deeply values the importance of education. This enthusiasm was fueled early on by the outstanding example of her father, who was very involved in her education and instilled a desire to constantly learn, excel and make a difference in people’s lives. Her father’s motto “Whatever you do, put your heart in it,” has become part of Raaki’s philosophy for living.
Raaki’s zeal for education was exemplified by her election to Student Body Vice President at Metropolitan State College of Denver in 2000, while earning a second degree in Political Science. (Her first degree is in Criminal Justice from the University of Arizona.) In 2001, Raaki won the Outstanding Woman of the Year Award from the Institute of Women’s Studies and Services, in recognition of her contributions to women’s education. She also was a recipient of the Student Leadership Award, presented by the Faculty of Metropolitan State College of Denver.
Raaki’s is very active with various ministries in her church. In her free time she loves to spend time with her family in the great outdoors of Colorado, snowshoeing with their three dogs, horseback riding, hiking, and traveling at least twice a year with her husband Gary Ulam—who incidentally love’s Raaki’s gourmet cooking abilities.
Raaki is very happy that her position with the Independence Institute has allowed her to bring the good news of the school choice opportunities in Colorado via OpcionEscolarParaNinos.org and SchoolChoiceForKids.org.
